Family and friends of the Cuban nurse Danay García Hernández, who passed away this Monday in Texas, have requested financial assistance to cover the costs of her funeral in the United States.
García, 49 years old and the mother of a teenager, passed away after a long battle with lung cancer. A source close to her family told CiberCuba that she had been hospitalized due to complications related to the disease and suffered two cardiac arrests that led to her death.
Thathy Abraham, a colleague and friend of García, launched a fundraising campaign to help her family cover the costs of the funeral services.
"I would like all of Danay's friends to help her. Her body is still in the morgue. We all know how expensive it is to transport a body. If each of us contributes a little, we could help her mother, who is elderly, and her son, who is still very much a teenager," Abraham asked.
Damarys García, the sister of the deceased, shared the message on her social media. Addressing doubts and comments that some people expressed regarding the credibility of the request, she stated: “Please support this initiative to help with my sister’s funeral. This is not a scam. This young woman is a coworker of my sister who just wants to help us during this very sad time. If you have any questions, please call my sister's contact, which my mother has at the moment.”
Anyone wishing to contribute can contact the numbers +1 (469) 650-2701 and +1 (469) 490-8666, the note stated.
García arrived in the United States in 2022 after living in Ecuador for about seven years. He is survived by his elderly mother, Mercedes, and his young son, Caleb, with whom he resided in the U.S., as well as other family members in Cuba. He was originally from the province of Artemisa.
His death has caused deep dismay among family, friends, and colleagues, who have shared messages of remembrance, affection, and admiration for him on social media.
"I just woke up to this sad news. My friend Danay, with whom I've shared so many years of adolescent moments that no longer exist, has given me so much strength, sister, and now you've left without us having the chance to see each other again. Fly high, my friend; God will keep you in a beautiful place," wrote Iraida Espinosa.
“How sad, I am very depressed. Our whole family is deeply moved by this news; you left us very young, with many plans and hopes of reuniting. But what lifts me up today are the promises of the Lord that one day we will meet again, and it will be forever,” were the heartfelt words of one of her family members.
"We have lost a great friend; our condolences to her family, neighbors, and to all of us who had the privilege of knowing the wonderful person she was. Farewell, Dany, you will always remain deep in our hearts, and you will continue to be present for all of us," expressed another friend.
Professionals who worked with García in Ecuador also told CiberCuba that she was an excellent person and nurse.
