Carlos Varela previews a fragment of his new song: "This is unbearable."

A new song by the Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela is coming, and it promises to be another musical success from a dissenting artist who has already depicted the decay of the "continuity" regime with the song "La feria de los tontos," released in December 2021.

Under the title "Elephants," the author of iconic themes from the 90s in Cuba seems to be making a comeback, judging by the video snippets he shared through his social media.

"Working on the song 'Elephants' from my new album," wrote Carlos Varela in a Facebook reel where he is seen working alongside a sound engineer.

In just half a minute of video, fragments of a song can be heard that suggest a critique of the Cuban regime and the critical situation to which its violent rule has led for more than six decades.

"This is unbearable," Carlos Varela is heard singing while mixing sounds in the recording studio. The verse is interrupted, but the six words are enough to hint at the direction of the lyrics for "Elefantes," a song that will certainly generate discussion when it is finally released.

In August 2021, the musician used the same promotional strategy to launch his song "La feria de los tontos," of which he shared excerpts through his social media.

“I have been composing La Feria de los Tontos for more than a year, and now I feel like it is starting to breathe. I leave you this clip recorded with my brothers from Sweet Lizzy Project,” wrote the composer on his Facebook profile along with the recording at House of Blues Studios in Nashville, Tennessee.

The song, finally released in December of that year -marked in Cuba's history by the massive protests of July 11- became a success and an anthem for Cubans denouncing the dictatorship.

"Come, come/ to the House of Games/ where fear is distributed/ and everyone wears a blindfold and carries a blind man's cane./ Come/ to dance with the clowns,/ the little step of failure,/ giving away a smile and selling hugs," says the excerpt from the video clip, filmed in black and white and featuring the artist singing inside an old television.
