The Methodist Church of Guantánamo announced that it will accommodate about 65 people, mostly children, from San Antonio del Sur, who have lost nearly everything due to the devastating floods caused by Hurricane Oscar.

In addition to accommodation, those affected will receive support for medications and medical care as needed, according to a statement from the organization on Facebook.

The heavy rains from Oscar left several communities in San Antonio del Sur submerged, with water levels reaching up to one meter in some areas.

The rise of the Sabanalamar and Los Ciguatos rivers caused serious damage to homes and the loss of belongings and appliances, primarily affecting low-income families who now face significant challenges in their recovery.

Also in that territory, at least six people reportedly died from drowning, reported the Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel.

Images shared on social media, particularly on TikTok, highlight the extent of the flooding and the rescue efforts by the residents themselves.

Despite the evacuation efforts in San Antonio del Sur and Imías, where over 15,000 people were evacuated, some residents were caught off guard by the sudden rise of the rivers, leaving them insufficient time to evacuate or reach safe areas.

The situation became even more critical due to a widespread blackout on the island, which complicated evacuation and preparedness efforts, hindered communication, and limited access to weather information. The lack of electricity also impacted the Civil Defense alert systems, making it more difficult to prepare for and respond to the arrival of the cyclone.

In the midst of the critical situation faced by many families, several Cuban activists have come together to send humanitarian aid to those affected.
