The solidarity project "Aliento de Vida" sent the first six suitcases to Guantánamo, each weighing over 90 pounds, filled with clothing, shoes, sheets, towels, food, and hygiene products, to support those affected by Hurricane Oscar.
With this initial shipment of over 540 pounds of donations, the organization aims to provide relief to those who have lost everything in the aftermath of the cyclone, said Yankiel Fernández, the leader of the initiative, on Facebook.
Fernández emphasized that they are already distributing the initial aid and closely assessing the situation of those affected.
The activist regretted not being able to attend; however, he noted that a delegation from the team traveled to Guantánamo to deliver supplies and provide support to families in vulnerable situations.
Additionally, he mentioned that these actions are evidence of the project's commitment to being present throughout Cuba and assisting those who need it most, in line with its philosophy of "leaving footprints" and bringing Breath of Life to every corner of the country.
In addition, it was announced that they will continue gathering donations for a second shipment in the coming days, expressing gratitude for the support of those who contributed money, clothing, food, medicines, and hygiene products.
"In our project, we do not rest, we do not stop, and we certainly do not play around when it comes to helping people," Fernández stated, emphasizing the numerous hardships faced by those affected and the importance of this supportive work.
"Aliento de Vida," with Fernández at the helm, responded to the call of activist Yamilka Laffita—known as Lara Crofs— to gather humanitarian aid for those affected by Hurricane Oscar in eastern Cuba.
Fernández, who had announced the departure of donations to Guantánamo, expressed his gratitude “to all those who have supported us and have brought donations and made financial contributions for transportation, as well as for purchasing some resources.”
He also thanked Lara Crofs (Laffita) "for the initiative" and "for always being there for everyone," as well as "the followers and friends who have supported this cause of doing good for the community."
Various individuals and independent organizations in Cuba and abroad have been providing assistance to those affected by Hurricane Oscar, which left several communities isolated due to severe flooding in the eastern part of the country.
Among these initiatives, activists from the solidarity project "Huellas" launched a social media campaign last Tuesday to support those affected.
Another who offered his supportive hand was the popular Cuban comedian Andy Vázquez, known for his iconic character Facundo on the show "Vivir del cuento," who made a call to his followers to assist those affected by the cyclone.
“I am here to ask the community for help, to all the people who want to assist our brothers in eastern Cuba, who have lost everything. Those interested can message me at the number 239-470-8181,” said the actor on Instagram.
