Cuban meteorologists are investigating the potential fall of a meteorite in the province of Matanzas after users on social media reported seeing a trail of smoke in the sky around 7:13 p.m.
The newspaper Juventud Técnica explained on Facebook that this trail does not appear to correspond to a typical airplane contrail, but rather to processes such as the fall of meteorites, the publication states.
Henry Delgado Manzor, a Cuban aeronautical meteorologist, noted that no sounds associated with the phenomenon have been reported, suggesting that there was no fragmentation and that it was likely a small object.
Additionally, it was clarified that this event is not related to twilight effects caused by rocket launches from Florida, and no aircraft were recorded in the area during that time.
So far, the discovery of a fragment on land has not been confirmed, making it impossible to state that it is a meteorite. It is possible that what was observed was a fireball or a small bolide, he details.
In the coming days, international systems for detecting meteors will be updated— the latest available data is up to October 27— which could provide more information.
