Alfredo Rodríguez, the renowned Cuban singer-songwriter, and his son Alfredo Rodríguez Jr., an internationally acclaimed pianist, have expressed their deep sorrow over the passing of Quincy Jones, the legendary artist and music producer, who was also a key figure in the young musician's career.
The news of his passing on Sunday night at his residence in Bel Air, California, has had a profound impact on the Rodríguez family members, who remember him not only as a mentor but also as a close friend.
Through the social media platform Instagram, Alfredo Rodríguez Jr. shared heartfelt words: "Today the world has truly lost a legend. My mentor, my friend, my family, the maestro Quincy Jones. I can't find the right words to express how grateful and honored I feel for the many years of beautiful moments I had the privilege to share with Quincy. He changed my life and my music in so many positive ways."
While on Facebook, the father shared an emotional message in which he expressed his gratitude. "I won't have a lifetime to thank you; I’ve said it a thousand times, and I will repeat it endlessly. How great you were in every way; as always, my kiss on your forehead. Go with God, my friend."
These words reflect the immense admiration and affection both men felt for the one who helped advance the pianist's career in the competitive music scene in the United States.
The relationship between Jones and the Rodríguez family began in 2006 when the legendary producer was impressed by Alfredo Jr.'s talent at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
Upon seeing his performance, Jones decided to take on the role of manager for the young pianist, who at that time did not have a representative or a recording contract.
Two years later, Rodríguez Jr. accepted the invitation and, with a suitcase full of sheet music, crossed the border from Mexico to the United States to begin his new life under Jones's wing.
Adam Fell, Vice President of Quincy Jones Productions, recalled how Jones welcomed Rodríguez Jr. to Los Angeles, providing him with accommodation for two years and guiding him in his initial steps in the American music industry.
Under the guidance of his mentor, the young musician developed a unique style, exploring his Latin roots in his debut album in 2012. This loss marks a time of mourning for both of them, as they reflect on and express gratitude for the immeasurable impact Jones had on their lives.
