Explosion reported at the Cuatro Caminos market in Havana

Explosion at Cuatro Caminos market with no reported casualties. The incident, possibly due to a transformer failure, prompted a response from police and firefighters.

An explosion occurred at the Cuatro Caminos market on Saturday afternoon, with no apparent loss of human life.

The incident occurred at around one in the afternoon, according to a video from the independent outlet CubaNet.

On its Facebook profile, CubaNet shared a video showing damage to the floor of the exterior hallway of the market.

According to the media, the explosion may have been caused by a failure in an underground transformer.

A visible presence of police and firefighters was seen at the site, although no fire was observed.

The Cuatro Caminos market, one of the largest in the country, was reopened in November 2019 following extensive government promotion, on a day when the hungry crowd caused chaos and damage at the venue.

Closed that same day, it was reopened in January 2020 after “maintenance work, repairs, restocking, and inventory,” said the authorities of CIMEX.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, it underwent several phases of facility closures due to outbreaks of the coronavirus among its employees.
