A Cuban activist reminded this Monday that, although Hurricane Rafael impacted the western region of Cuba, along with a massive blackout and seismic activity in the east, the province of Guantánamo remains in emergency due to the destruction caused by Cyclone Oscar just days earlier.
Johanna Jolá Álvarez, leader of the solidarity initiative "Huellas," emphasized on Facebook that they intend to return to that area to continue assisting those affected.
“Early in the morning at the Huellas headquarters, preparations are underway for the upcoming trip to San Antonio del Sur, Imías, Baracoa, and Maisí,” Jolá emphasized.
In this regard, the activist expressed gratitude for international solidarity, particularly "to our German friends who continue to bridge the distance by bringing medical supplies in their luggage for the care of our sick."
Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude to all the neighbors of the Casino Deportivo, who, despite the difficulties, remain an essential part of Huellas' work.
"Thanks to Mario Hui for his energy, vitality, and constant attention to community well-being, developing a communication effort that benefits everyone," he emphasized.
The activist also acknowledged Mayi and the residents of Centro Habana, who, despite adversity, continue to be driving forces that make their mark with every step, with special mention of Luis Miguel Ulacia.
“To the lovely people of Marianao, who, despite being without water, gas, electricity, or phone service, give so much love and dedication, and to all the residents of Havana whose donations provide support to those in need.”
The aftermath of Hurricane Oscar, which struck near Baracoa in October with winds of 130 km/h, is still being felt in several municipalities of the Guantánamo province.
Among the victims, one family stands out as they have been left completely destitute after the cyclone took away their home and all their belongings.
The victims reside in Yacabo Abajo, a village located in the Imías municipality. They are a young mother, her two children, and her husband, who are sleeping on the floor at a neighbor's house.
Recently, filmmaker Daniel Ross Dieguez launched an urgent appeal for help to assist several families who were left homeless after the devastating impact of Hurricane Óscar.
This natural phenomenon severely impacted the community, leaving homes in ruins and its residents in a state of extreme vulnerability.
