A Cuban activist recalled this Monday that, although Hurricane Rafael affected the western region of Cuba, along with a massive blackout and seismic activity in the east, the province of Guantánamo remains in emergency due to the devastation caused by Cyclone Oscar days earlier.

Johanna Jolá Álvarez, leader of the solidarity initiative "Huellas," emphasized on Facebook that they intend to return to that area to continue assisting those affected.

"Early in the morning at the Huellas headquarters, preparations are underway for the upcoming departure to San Antonio del Sur, Imías, Baracoa, and Maisí," emphasized Jolá.

In that regard, the activist expressed gratitude for international solidarity, “to our German friends who continue to bridge distances and bring medical supplies in their luggage for the care of our sick.”

Additionally, he expressed his gratitude to all the neighbors of Casino Deportivo, who, regardless of the challenges, remain an essential part of Huellas' work.

"Thanks to Mario Hui for his energy, vitality, and constant attention to community well-being, developing a communication effort that benefits everyone," he emphasized.

The activist also acknowledged Mayi and the residents of Centro Habana, who, despite adversity, continue to be driving forces that make an impact with every step, with special mention of Luis Miguel Ulacia.

"To the wonderful people of Marianao, who despite lacking water, gas, electricity, and telephone services, offer so much love and dedication, and to all the people of Havana who, with their donations, support those in need."

The aftermath of Hurricane Oscar, which struck near Baracoa in October with winds of 130 km/h, is still being felt in several municipalities of the Guantánamo province.

Among the victims, one family stands out as having been completely left homeless after the cyclone took away their house and all their belongings.

The affected individuals reside in Yacabo Abajo, a village located in the Imías municipality. It is a young mother, her two children, and her husband, who are sleeping on the floor at a neighbor's house.

Recently, filmmaker Daniel Ross Dieguez launched an urgent appeal for help to assist several families who have been left homeless in the wake of the devastating Hurricane Oscar.

This natural phenomenon severely affected the community, leaving houses in ruins and their residents in a state of extreme vulnerability.
