The Juan Vitalio Acuña basic secondary school, located in the municipality of Pilón in Granma, has been forced to close its doors due to the damage caused by the strong earthquakes that struck the area on Sunday morning.
The local station CMKX Radio Bayamo shared photos on its Facebook page showing the damage to the structure.
Fallen windows and others on the verge of detaching, as well as broken and cracked walls, have exposed several classrooms.
According to the information, specialists from the Provincial Company of Technical Services and Community Architects of Granma assessed the construction situation of the facility and determined that it is not safe.
"At this time, classes are not being conducted at the educational institution, which has been severely affected by the earthquakes on Sunday," the statement concludes.
The Juan Vitalio Acuña secondary school is one of the 40 educational institutions in Granma that were damaged by the earthquakes that occurred last Sunday in eastern Cuba.
The province was the most affected, with a total of seven injured and more than 2,000 homes impacted.
It was reported on Monday at the National Defense Council of Civil Defense that there are, in preliminary figures, 2,018 housing damages, including 26 total collapses. Additionally, there are significant damages in 30 health institutions.
The population remains on alert, as the number of aftershocks detected has risen to 1,130 in recent hours, with 47 of them being noticeable, especially in Pilón.
Granma authorities stated that there were no fatalities as a direct result of the earthquakes; however, there are seven injured individuals, including two minors.
In Pilón, there are reports of house collapses, wall cracks, falling ceiling tiles in the Comandante Félix Lugones hospital, and breaks in the breakwater.
In the mountainous areas, nine landslides have been recorded.
