In response to the damage caused by Hurricane Oscar in the eastern region of the island, the Cuban government began selling subsidized mattresses to affected families in Baracoa, Guantánamo, this Saturday.
According to reports from Radio Baracoa on Facebook, sales are taking place at the location known as the "mercado campón."
On November 2nd, Yanisley Ortiz Mantecón, the Deputy Minister of Finance and Prices, reported that the hurricane had caused severe material damage, particularly to homes. To support those affected, the Cuban government arranged for the sale of construction materials and mattresses with a 50% subsidy, as outlined in Agreement 9991 from the Council of Ministers, which was recently published in the Official Gazette of the Republic.
Ortiz Mantecón noted that, in addition to subsidies, individuals with insufficient income will be able to access bank loans or request financing through Social Assistance, in accordance with current legislation.
Despite these measures, many Cubans expressed skepticism. In previous events such as Hurricane Ian in 2022, the government promised similar support, but assistance faced delays, material shortages, and high prices, making recovery difficult for most of those affected.
