The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) reported on Wednesday that nearly 5,000 aftershocks have occurred following the two earthquakes last Sunday, November 10, southeast of the municipality of Pilón in Granma.
According to the latest report, since the occurrence of the two earthquakes measuring 6 and 6.7 degrees, a total of 4,941 aftershocks have been recorded, of which 118 have been reported as perceptible or presumably perceptible.
According to the report, the most affected area remains Pilón-Chivirico, with 382 events ranging from magnitude 2.1 to 3.5.
On Tuesday, at 6:11 AM, a strong earthquake measuring 4.2 in magnitude was detected, felt in several municipalities of Granma and Santiago de Cuba.
According to Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the national seismological service of CENAIS, the tremor was located at coordinates 19.75 degrees north latitude and 77.23 degrees west longitude, approximately 20.51 km southwest of Pilón, at a depth of about 10 km.
Days ago, the expert warned that the rest of the Oriente fault, which had been inactive recently, has begun to 'awaken'; this was previously considered normal in areas near Santiago de Cuba.
The 4.2 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday caused further damage to the already vulnerable buildings in Pilón, a locality that was severely affected by the 6.7 tremor on November 10.
