A Cuban was arrested following a series of armed robberies at various locations in Miami.
The police were able to locate him thanks to the tracking of a stolen cellphone from one of the incidents. The suspect confessed to the crimes after being captured.
The wave of crime began early Monday morning when a 46-year-old Cuban, identified as Carlos Orlando Sainz, threatened a CVS store employee in Downtown Miami with a knife to carry out his first robbery.
During the following 24 hours, Sainz committed several similar offenses in other areas of the city.
In statements to Telemundo 51, Manuel Morales, head of the Miami police department, said that the suspect "committed four incidents within a span of approximately 24 hours."
One of them occurred that same night, when the suspect stole an electric scooter on Northeast 17th Street in Edgewater, threatening the victim with a knife.
On the scooter, he traveled to a Walgreens store in Brickell, where he threatened the staff with the same weapon and stole $135.
Two witnesses managed to intervene, disarm him, and recover the cash register.
The criminal activity continued until the morning of November 19, when the suspect assaulted a woman on Northeast 29th Street and 180th, taking her purse and cellphone.
That last robbery was crucial for his arrest, as the detectives were able to track the phone and locate Sainz.
"This arrest sends a clear message to the criminal element: if they come to the city of Miami to attack our residents or visitors, we will identify them and apprehend them," Morales concluded.
