The boy Yodelmis Furones Matos, who suffered a head injury a month ago due to the ceiling collapse of his home during Hurricane Oscar, has returned to his home in Baracoa.
Yodelmis, six years old, sustained serious injuries and remained hospitalized until Friday at the Antonio María Béguez César Pediatric Hospital (La Colonia) in Santiago de Cuba, where he underwent emergency surgery to treat a skull fracture.
The facility shared photos on its Facebook profile of the child, fully recovered and happy with his parents.
Director Jesús Cabrera assessed the performance of the staff at the Octavio de la Concepción Municipal Hospital and the Pedraja Hospital in Baracoa as very positive, where the child received initial care before being airlifted to Santiago de Cuba the next day. The child was then in critical condition, with life-threatening risks.
The family expressed their gratitude for the care provided by the doctors and nurses at La Colonia hospital in Santiago.
Although Yodelmis was out of danger by the end of October, she had to remain in the intensive care unit of the center for a while longer until she fully recovered from the surgery.
By that time, the minor did not exhibit any motor, physical, or intellectual difficulties as a result of the trauma experienced, and his response to pharmacological treatment was favorable.
The incident in which the child was injured occurred on October 21 at around 2:00 AM in Joa, a town located 15 kilometers away with just over a thousand inhabitants, when a mango tree fell on the family home, leaving it in ruins.
The child's mother, Kirenia Matos Laborí, recounted days ago to the Santiago newspaper Sierra Maestra that a wall collapsed on Yodelmis, leaving him unconscious. In the midst of the blackout, she tried to save him along with her husband, who fractured his leg.
They ran to a neighbor's house, who took them in his jeep to the Baracoa hospital.
