A resident of the municipality of Los Arabos in the province of Matanzas reported a case of theft and tampering involving a package sent from Mexico by her husband, who is on a mission in that country, after picking it up at the Cuban postal office.

According to the testimony of the affected individual, when she picked up the package at the post office, it was closed but showed clear signs of having been tampered with beforehand, she reported in an email to the CiberCuba editorial team.

The woman reported that upon opening the package, she discovered that several items sent by her husband were missing, including personal care products, jeans, and flip-flops.

To conceal the loss, those responsible would have placed pieces of iron in the box to match the weight.

Outraged, the affected individual explained that the package had been in the province for over a week, during which time, she suspects, the theft occurred.

To make matters worse, the robbery victim reported the lack of response from the authorities after filing the necessary complaint.

"What they have is a lack of respect. No one has the right to steal anything. Both the leaders and those in charge need to be vigilant to ensure that events like this do not happen again," he stated in his message.

The case highlights once again the flaws in postal security in Cuba, as well as the lack of accountability in monitoring and resolving these irregularities.

Cubans who, for various reasons, live outside their country are acutely aware of the hardships their family members face on the island. For this reason, they send packages with aid to alleviate the shortages their loved ones experience.

Unfortunately, these shipments are often targeted for theft, a practice that further exacerbates the difficult situation.

Recently, a Cuban woman living in Spain, identified as Idisleidys Sosa, reported that she sent a cell phone to her uncle in Perico, Matanzas, but instead he received a box filled with screws and chicken broth packets.

The woman expressed her outrage, stating that she sent a package containing a cell phone and two pairs of glasses for her uncle. However, upon receiving it, she found the glasses were intact, while the box for the cell phone contained only screws and chicken broth packets.

Sosa described the incident as "a lack of respect" and expressed his disappointment with the Cuban postal service, accusing it of having manipulated and looted the contents of the package.

"It's incredible that you trust an institution to deliver a package to your family and end up receiving something like this," he expressed in a comment sent to CiberCuba.

A similar case occurred in Cárdenas, Matanzas, where a woman reported that after receiving a package through Correos de Cuba, she found a bag of screws used to fill the parcel after part of the original contents had been stolen.

However, the problem of theft, while recurring, is not limited to Matanzas. Recently, a Cuban woman reported a similar incident that occurred in Camagüey.

Frequently Asked Questions about Package Theft in Cuba

What challenges does Correos de Cuba face with international shipments?

Cuba's postal service is facing serious security and efficiency issues in handling international shipments. Packages sent to Cuba are frequently tampered with and stolen, as evidenced by numerous reports of theft, where recipients receive boxes filled with packing material instead of the actual items sent. Additionally, the lack of fuel and reliance on small businesses for distribution have led to significant delays in package delivery.

How does the lack of fuel affect Correos de Cuba?

The fuel shortages in Cuba have negatively impacted the transportation and distribution capabilities of Correos de Cuba. This scarcity leads to significant delays in package delivery, exacerbating the situation for shipments that are already affected by theft and mishandling. The company has acknowledged that this issue hinders its ability to meet delivery deadlines.

What measures has Correos de Cuba taken to improve postal service?

Cuban Post has announced investments for the automation and digital transformation of its operations. However, these measures have not significantly improved the service, as issues such as theft and delays continue to be a concern for users. Additionally, the company has distributed bicycles to postal workers to enhance local delivery, although this does not address the problems related to international shipments.

What is the authorities' response to reports of thefts in postal shipments in Cuba?

Cuban authorities and Correos de Cuba have demonstrated an ineffective response to theft complaints. Victims often do not receive a satisfactory resolution to their claims, which increases distrust in the postal system on the island. Despite numerous reports, the situation has not significantly improved, leaving many Cubans abroad concerned about the safety of their shipments.
