An elderly man who used to beg for alms in the Regla municipality of Havana was found dead on the sidewalk on Monday morning.

Images shared in the Facebook group "Crímenes en Cuba" showed the elderly man collapsed against a wall next to what appeared to be his belongings.

The mentioned source specified that there were no funeral cars available for the transfer of the body, which apparently had to be transported on a tricycle.

In the two photos shared, a police officer, a patrol car, and local residents can be seen.

As of the publication of this note, there are no further details regarding the tragic discovery, which once again confirms the state of vulnerability in which many elderly people in Cuba continue to exist.

The death of the elderly man under neglect sparked a wave of reactions on social media

"How sad the life of the elderly in this country"; "Rest in peace, another victim of a failed government that is incapable of taking care of its people"; "Poor Cuba. God knows how hard that elderly man worked in his life to die on the street in total neglect, perhaps even from hypoglycemia"; "How sad the plight of vulnerable seniors. Rest in peace, I didn't know him, and it hurts," were some of the comments.

"That's the sad reality of this cursed country. What's coming is worse than the apocalypse. I've seen master's degree professionals going hungry... so this could be expected for that poor old man. May God receive him in the highest," stated another internet user.

Elders Marked by the Crisis

The elderly are undoubtedly one of the groups most affected by the crisis of recent years. It has become increasingly common to see older individuals in Cuba who are surviving by begging, searching for food scraps in the garbage, and even sleeping on the streets.

Begging has significantly increased on the island in a context characterized by inflation, shortages of basic goods, and low wages and pensions.

In recent months, people with mental or physical disabilities, as well as elderly individuals without family or a home, have been wandering alone or sometimes accompanied by a pet. They can be seen lying on old cardboard in streets, parks, doorways, and bus stops throughout the country.

Simultaneously, on social media, more and more Cubans have pointed out the severity of the phenomenon of begging, especially among elderly individuals—a reality that the regime has claimed for decades could not be found on the streets of the country.
