A traffic accident occurred on the morning of this Sunday at the San Pedro Bridge, popularly known as the Cotorro Bridge, in Havana.
The incident involved a tricycle and a bus, resulting in considerable material damage but, fortunately, no loss of life. The tricycle, a light blue vehicle, collided directly with the bus, leaving it completely destroyed.
In images released from the scene, the overturned tricycle can be seen after the collision, along with several boxes scattered on the ground that were being transported in it.
According to information shared by Marielvis Guillama in the Facebook group ‘Accidentes Buses & Camiones’, the incident did not result in any fatalities.
"Thank God it wasn't so fatal, just material losses. The tricycle driver didn't see the bus and collided with it. He took several hits, but thank God, there's no danger to his life," commented the user, whose father was the driver of the bus involved, as she stated.
Although the tricycle driver suffered minor injuries, it has not been confirmed whether he was taken to a hospital or the exact reasons that led to the crash.
Social media users speculate that it may have been a miscalculation by the tricycle driver, which led to the collision with the bus.
The accident once again highlights the issues of road safety in Cuba, where traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of unnatural deaths, ranking fifth according to official data. Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
A recurring pattern of accidents involving tricycles
The accident that occurred at the Cotorro Bridge is not an isolated incident. Tricycles, both electric and traditional, have become an increasingly common mode of transportation in Cuba due to the public transport crisis.
However, this has also led to an increase in traffic incidents involving these vehicles.
In December 2024, an accident in Sancti Spíritus involving a vehicle from the Special Brigade and a tricycle resulted in several injuries.
Similarly, in August of that same year, a collision between a motorcycle and a tricycle in Holguín resulted in serious injuries for both drivers.
Moreover, the widespread use of electric tricycles, which has significantly increased since 2024, has not been accompanied by the necessary infrastructure and training to ensure their safety on the roads.
In September 2024, the government announced an increase in the fleet of these vehicles as part of an alternative transportation plan, yet accidents continue to be frequent due to inadequate regulation and poor road conditions.
In more tragic cases, such as the one that occurred in December 2024 in Havana, a child passed away and three family members were injured in a multiple-vehicle accident involving a truck and a tricycle.
These facts highlight the urgent need to enhance road safety through measures that include greater regulation of tricycle use, improved signage, and educational programs for drivers, in order to prevent further tragedies.
