The Cuban-Argentinian pediatrician Aleida Guevara Mach, youngest daughter of the guerrilla fighter Ernesto 'Che' Guevara and active member of the Communist Party of Cuba, admitted today that the salaries of Cubans are not enough to live on, but that the Government is "trying to address" this issue.
"That one of our workers cannot buy all the necessary things to live with the salary they receive is a serious problem that the Revolution faces and tries to solve," he said in a statement to the state-owned Prensa Latina on the occasion of the birth anniversary of his father.
According to Guevara, the issue of salaries in Cuba needs to be addressed, although "the goal is not" for Cubans to be "millionaires." "The goal is not to be millionaires, but neither for families to depend on remittances from abroad," he pointed out.
The doctor, who also collaborates with the Che Guevara Studies Center on the island, admitted that the State must improve the country's economy. "That is undeniable," she emphasized, "Che should be more present in our economy," she stated.
"If all we think about is our pocket, about living better, we can forget that we are seeking a different society, and that is a real danger in recent times," added Guevara, who also acknowledged that "many things were neglected in Cuba during the Special Period."
At that time, he said, "solutions were sought, perhaps not the best ones, but they were the ones for those circumstances. Now we have time to find others: rectifying is one of the beautiful qualities of the revolutionary process," he opined.
Aleida Guevara was interviewed on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Che's birth, a date that the official press uses to reinforce the myth of the "heroic guerrilla," one of the most exalted figures by communist propaganda in Cuba.
