The Cuban José Miguel Álvarez has been included in a list of the most cited scientific authors in the world. This initiative, promoted by the Web of Science (WoS) group, annually identifies the top 1% of researchers most frequently cited across more than 21 areas of knowledge.
"I was surprised by an email I received from Web of Science informing me that I was selected for the significant impact of my articles over the past decade," stated the scientist based in Ecuador to the newspaper El Comercio.
Based on over 12 million articles published in nearly 12,000 scientific journals, WoS has created a list of the most influential authors, including Álvarez in the field of Agricultural Sciences due to his research on bioactive compounds found in certain foods and their effects on health.
The Cuban has based his research on fruits, vegetables, and tubers from the Sierra and Coast regions of the South American country. His main objective is to evaluate how these contribute to disease prevention and their anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antioxidant properties.
This is the first time that a researcher based in Ecuador has been included in this annual list, which features more than 6,000 scientists from around the world.
José Miguel Álvarez holds a degree in Veterinary Medicine and a Master's in Preventive Veterinary Medicine from the Central University of Las Villas in Cuba. He also earned a Ph.D. in Food and Health and has a postdoctoral degree in Food Science from the Università Politecnica delle Marche in Italy. He is the author of over 50 scientific articles in specialized journals, serves as an associate editor for the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, and reviews for more than 15 scientific journals.
