"Everyone has had to leave this place; people are hungry, and what we need is freedom," demanded one of the Cubans who gathered this Monday in front of the police station in El Cobre, in the city of Santiago de Cuba.
In a video published by the communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, it can be heard that the crowd sang their truths to the large group of police present at the scene, while also demanding the release of those detained during the protests on Sunday.
"I don't have to leave my country. This is my country, I love it, we all love it. Everyone has had to leave here," said a Santiago resident while asking people, "How long, sir!"
At a later moment, a middle-aged woman was heard saying, “This town has been good, and you have to acknowledge it. A humble and resilient town. What’s going on!”
The woman, with a defiant attitude and shouting, also pointed out: “And every time I can say it, I will: I am a supporter of Fidel and a revolutionary. People are hungry!”.
The call of "No to violence!" was heard in El Cobre this Sunday night, as its residents joined the massive demonstrations that took place in various cities across Cuba.
In the eastern town, known for hosting the National Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity, several individuals were detained during the protests.
The incident prompted locals to protest in front of the local police station on Monday.
"The people of El Cobre are staging a demonstration in front of the police station, demanding freedom for Cuba and for the young people who were imprisoned yesterday. It's happening right now. I lived in El Cobre; my whole family is there," said Cuban broadcaster Indira Solís on Facebook.
Several individuals have been reported detained, including Oriesel Garcia Isaac, a 41-year-old mason and father, who was taken to a police station in the main municipality, according to a video published by activist Mayeta.
