Last Friday, the Miami International Airport (MIA) set a record for the highest number of travelers screened in a single day, with over 2.9 million people passing through its checkpoints prior to the Memorial Day weekend.

Likewise, airport facility officials told Local 10 that more than 160,000 people, on average, have passed through there every day since Friday, which represents a 10% increase from what they saw last year.

This Monday, it was expected that the influx to the airport would be intense, as many of those people would be returning to their homes; however, everything seems to have proceeded in total normality, according to the mentioned media.

"We thought that the airport would be very crowded, but it's not," said user Carey White.

Officials from another Florida airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, also said they have been averaging just over 100,000 passengers per day.

Last March, coinciding with Spring Break and Easter celebrations, MIA recorded the highest passenger growth in its history for the year so far.

Until that moment, the airport served 12.3 million passengers, which represented one million more travelers than in the same dates last year, with an increase of 9.6 percent, according to a press release from the port authority.

The number of flights made to or from MIA also increased by 9 percent compared to the same period last year, since the spring break started at the Florida universities and on the coast on March first, the source stated.
