In addition to the shortage of medications at healthcare facilities and the absence of specialist doctors, there is also a lack of hygiene in the bathrooms of hospitals in Santiago de Cuba, as reported on social media this Thursday.
"Terrible conditions of the bathrooms in the Internal Medicine ward at the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba," reported the communicator Yosmany Mayeta on Facebook, accompanying his post with videos and photos that demonstrate the lack of cleanliness in that healthcare facility.
This article contains images and descriptions of inadequate hygiene conditions in a hospital that may be disturbing to some readers. The images are presented to raise awareness and highlight the issue. Viewer discretion is advised.
The images show a completely obstructed cup, overflowing trash bins, and in the space where a toilet should be, not only is its absence noticeable, but people are urinating and defecating there.
The situation affects both patients and their companions, who must endure long hours and attend to their needs under deplorable conditions, putting their health at risk.
CiberCuba spoke with a worker from the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital, who reported that this situation occurs in several restrooms throughout the healthcare facility.
Furthermore, he found it inexplicable that this is happening currently, as the number of beds in some services has been reduced to a minimum due to ongoing repairs on-site.
Finally, it was reported that the cleaning of the restrooms and other areas is being carried out by the incarcerated population, who are compelled to perform these tasks because there is no one available or interested in undertaking them.
The city of Santiago de Cuba, which is dealing with the presence of the Oropouche virus, has also faced criticism and complaints regarding the lack of hygiene in the restrooms of other hospitals.
Parents who had to take their sick children to the Sur Children's Hospital (La Colonia) reported a foul odor permeating the emergency room.
Several affected individuals sent independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada photos showing the deplorable hygiene of the place, with toilets overflowing with urine and paper, and a bucket that is supposed to be used for cleaning filled with black water.
"It's an unbearable situation. I spoke with the staff here, and they told me that there are no cleaning assistants," he said.
