For 45 years, Romeu's Cuban Restaurant, in South Florida, served the Cuban community in Broward County, but last Thursday it closed its doors definitively, leaving its loyal followers devastated.
According to Telemundo, the Broward County Sheriff's Office issued an eviction order for the business, as indicated in a notice posted on the door and in court documents.
A sign placed outside the establishment at Coquina Plaza, at 6800 Dykes Road, announced the closure of the Cuban restaurant.
"During these 45 years in the market, you have been more than customers to us. You have become our family," the text pointed out.
"We have faced many challenges in the past, but the current state of the economy is making it increasingly difficult to keep up with the management costs of our store," the letter stated.
The alleged debt of Romeu's Cuban Restaurant amounts to over $82,000 in rent payments, according to court documents.
"It breaks our hearts to have to say goodbye, but we have to prioritize the financial stability of our family," the text stated.
According to Telemundo, recently the restaurant shared a customer's Instagram story thanking them for years of comforting food and stating: "The worst day of all."
In 1978, the history of this restaurant began with several locations in Miami-Dade County before establishing itself in Broward.
Until its closure, Romeu's Cuban Restaurant offered meeting rooms for parties, takeout food service, home delivery, and a variety of services for birthdays, weddings, and christenings. In addition, they collaborate with churches and business groups.
This is not the only icon of Florida's gastronomy that has recently said goodbye.
Last May, Perricone's Marketplace & Café, an iconic Italian restaurant in Brickell, Miami, closed its doors permanently after 27 years delighting its diners with its exquisite culinary offerings.
Steven Perricone, the owner and founder of the establishment, announced through Instagram his decision to close the doors of the premises, arguing that "times change and I am no longer so young," justifying his determination this way.
