Young Cuban protests with a sign that says "Freedom" and "Cuba for Christ."

This peaceful protest is reminiscent of the case of Cuban political prisoner Luis Robles Elizástigui, sentenced to five years of deprivation of liberty in 2021 for demonstrating with a sign on San Rafael Boulevard in Havana.

A young Christian man demonstrated this weekend on a central avenue in Santiago de Cuba, holding up a sign with his hands that reads: "Freedom, Cuba for Christ."

This event took place in one of the busiest streets in the eastern city, especially on Saturdays, when the government organizes fairs with scarce products and thousands of people come to purchase what they need for their homes.

The video of the demonstration was shared on Facebook by the independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who thanked the people who sent him the images. The name of the young man who protested with the sign has not yet been revealed.

This peaceful protest is reminiscent of a similar case, that of the political prisoner Luis Robles Elizástigui, who was sentenced to five years in prison in 2021 for protesting with a sign on the San Rafael boulevard in Havana.

Since April, Robles is in a period to request parole, which has been denied by Cuban authorities.

These types of demonstrations evidence the growing discontent of some sectors of the population and the ongoing struggle for freedom of expression and human rights in Cuba.
