Vilma Almanza Siles, the woman who ran over and killed her Cuban boyfriend, Yuniesky Díaz Gómez, in Lexington, Nebraska, will appear in court next Monday, facing charges of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver's license.
Almanza, 42 years old and originally from Nicaragua, is accused of causing the death of Díaz, 38, on June 2nd, outside the Poderosa Apartments complex where they lived.
The suspect has been held in the Dawson County jail without bail since then and will make her first court appearance for the reading of charges on June 10 at 10 a.m., local media reported.
According to court documents, agents from the Lexington Police Department were dispatched to the apartment complex around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday and found Díaz on the ground with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle driven by Almanza.
Witnesses reported to the authorities that, upon arriving home that early morning, the couple had a disagreement, during which the woman tried to leave. Díaz stood in front of the car in an attempt to prevent her from leaving and was hit by his girlfriend.
The Cuban was rushed by Volunteer Fire Department personnel to the Lexington Regional Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
After being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, the Nicaraguan woman was subjected to a breathalyzer test, which registered a blood alcohol content of 0.118.
The Lexington Police Department is investigating the case with the assistance of the Dawson County Sheriff's Office.
Díaz was originally from Herradura, in Pinar del Río, and had been in a romantic relationship with Almanza since June 2023.
