Endorsed by her successes on the big stages, the multi-champion Cuban athlete Omara Durand is part of the group of candidates for the new Athletes' Council of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), whose selection will take place during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

According to the JIT publication, the queen of the 100, 200, and 400 meters flat races in the T12 category is one of the 26 candidates who will be on the ballots between August 28 and September 8.

All competitors will have the opportunity to vote in the Olympic Village, and finally, six representatives will be selected, who will be the voice of the community of athletes with disabilities, and their president and first vice president will have the right to vote on the IPC Governing Board.

The chosen ones will be announced at the closing ceremony of Paris 2024 and will join the three para-athletes who were confirmed during the Winter Paralympics of Beijing 2022.

It is worth remembering that the Cuban world record holder was part of the Athletes' Council elected during the Tokyo 2020 Games. However, this upcoming competition will be special for the 32-year-old athlete from Santiago, as she has already announced that these will be her last Olympics.

It makes me nostalgic when I think about it. Running is the only thing I have done in my life. I have the satisfaction of a wonderful sports career, with unforgettable moments, which is evidenced by every Paralympic, world, and Parapan American medal," she expressed when interviewed about her announced retirement from the tracks.

Alongside the stellar athletes Robiel Yankiel Sol (long jump category T46), Leinier Savón (100 and 200 meters, T12), and Leonardo Díaz Aldana (discus, F56), the eight-time champion in the premier sporting event leads the delegation from the largest of the Antilles to the program on French soil.
