The outstanding Cuban volleyball player Robertlandy Simón ended his time with the national team after they fell to Poland in their last match of the Nations League, a defeat that meant saying goodbye to participating in the Paris 2024 event.
Simón, the team leader, shared a message on Sunday on his Instagram account dedicated to all his teammates.
"Thank you for everything, guys. I love you and keep fighting," he wrote.
It is about the farewell of the middle blocker, who scored 92 points (58 in attack, 22 in blocks, and 12 in serves) throughout the tournament.
The 37-year-old Guantanamo native, who years ago was considered the best center in the world, returned to the Cuban team after several years away with the aim of securing a spot in the Olympics, which would have been his only chance to attend such an event.
The post has received thousands of likes from fans, friends, and colleagues in the profession.
"What a better experience than sharing the court with you. Thank you for your teachings and advice," emphasized the other central of the team, Javier Concepción.
"Thank you, thank you so much for everything Simón. You are great. It was a pleasure to play by your side, brother," said the libero Yonder García.
"Thank you for everything, brother, for the help and for the teachings. I wish you all the best," commented Marlon Yant.
"My brother, you deserved an Olympic Games, but unfortunately, you didn't achieve it. Anyway, you are a legend in world volleyball. You are loved," emphasized Osmany Juantorena, another Cuban athlete now naturalized Italian.
Simón was part of the Cuban national team from 2005 to 2010, the year in which he legally emigrated from Cuba to play professionally in Europe. He rejoined the Cuban team in 2019.
