The Minister of Culture Alpidio Alonso Grau stated in Cienfuegos that expressions of racism have not been eliminated in Cuba and that these have a greater presence during the economic crisis.
In that central area of the island, there is a social program called "Cuban Color" that, according to a report by the state-run TV channel Perlavisión, aims to address discrimination based on skin color and ethnic origin.
"There is a historical disadvantage, because they are the ones who have suffered the most. The Revolution created conditions for everyone, but even today, especially now in a moment of such profound economic difficulties like the one we are going through, these disadvantages resurface," the minister mentioned to a reduced group of people.
Alonso Grau's statement highlights the persistence of problems related to racial discrimination in Cuba and underscores the need to address this issue to ensure equality of rights and opportunities for all citizens.
Last year on the island, several complaints were made on social media about discriminatory attitudes of some citizens towards others.
The Cuban actor Jenrry Betancourt, known as Felito in the popular adventure "Los pequeños fugitivos," denounced through his social media the corruption present in the National School of Arts (ENA) and the ICRT, as well as the racism and favoritism prevailing in Cuban Television.
In his Facebook profile, the artist responded to those who wonder what has become of the protagonist of this contemporary version of the Cuban drama series and stated that he distanced himself from acting due to the bitter experiences he has had in these places.
A young Cuban woman also denounced racism in a rental ad in Havana a year ago, which literally states that it is "only for white people."
While another Cuban woman stated that her husband was a victim of racism by the police in Havana, who detained him in front of an ATM just because he was Black.
