The Cuban regime reported that it does not have enough chicken to distribute to children and pregnant women throughout the country through the regulated family basket.
Anayra Cabrera Martínez, General Director of Industrial Policy at the Ministry of Food Industry (Minal), stated in remarks to the official newspaper Granma that "this month, a policy of distributing chicken intended for children and pregnant women is being implemented"; however, "so far, there is no inventory to provide coverage for the entire country."
When talking about the distribution of the basic basket during the summer months when children are on vacation at home, he stated that "they work to ensure most products during the month of July"; however, "there are goods that will not be able to be guaranteed due to the lack of raw materials."
He mentioned that among the affected products is canned meat, which will only be produced to cover the month of August, the newspaper cited.
The government, for its part, will distribute a specialized package for children with low weight and height, which will include one kilogram of pasta, one kilogram of sweet cookies, four packs of jelly, and one liter of syrup; and states that the distribution of milk for children will be ensured until July 30th.
The Cuban government continues to face difficulties in ensuring the country's basic basket, while the issue of food becomes increasingly critical for families, especially during the holiday period.
Many families claim they can hardly afford to eat meat almost any day of the week, and market prices for essential products are extremely high in a country with one of the highest inflation rates in the world.
This week, Cuba raised the prices of six essential products, including chicken meat.
