A human fetus was found abandoned in the middle of the street this Wednesday in the Ateneo neighborhood, in the Vista Hermosa Council of Santiago de Cuba.

The local reporter Yosmany Mayeta posted on Facebook that the macabre discovery occurred on L Street, between 11th and 6th Streets, and shocked the residents of the area.

A neighbor from the neighborhood reported the incident through social media, detailing that the fetus had been on the street for some time before someone realized its nature.

"He had been lying on the street for a while, but they hadn't realized he was a child until now, and that's when two police officers on a motorcycle arrived," the witness recounted.

So far, the identity of the baby's mother is unknown.

The authorities are working to obtain more information about the case, as indicated in the report.

Unwanted pregnancies have skyrocketed due to the lack of contraceptives and increased difficulties in obtaining abortions because of lack of resources, all in a context marked by a growing economic and values crisis.

At the same time, the cases of newborns abandoned in dumpsters on the island have increased, most of which have been found dead.

In the midst of the crisis in Cuba, several newborn babies have been abandoned on the streets of the island, dead or alive.

Last year, a lifeless baby was found in a garbage tank in the middle of the city of Pinar del Río. Others were found in similar conditions in Old Havana and Las Tunas.

Recently, the body of another baby was found floating in the Bay of Havana.
