A human fetus was found abandoned in the middle of the street this Wednesday in Reparto Ateneo, located in the Vista Hermosa district of Santiago de Cuba.

Local reporter Yosmany Mayeta posted on Facebook that the gruesome discovery occurred on Calle L, between 11 and Calle 6, and shocked the residents of the area.

A neighbor from the neighborhood reported the incident on social media, noting that the fetus had been on the street for some time before anyone realized what it was.

"I was lying in the street for a while, but they hadn't realized I was a child until now, and then two police officers arrived on a motorcycle," the witness recounted.

So far, the identity of the child's mother is unknown.

The authorities are working to gather more information about the case, the report indicates.

Unwanted pregnancies have surged due to a lack of contraceptives and increased difficulties in accessing abortions because of resource shortages, all set against the backdrop of a growing economic and moral crisis.

At the same time, the number of abandoned newborns found in the island's dumpsters has increased, the majority of whom have been found dead.

Amid the crisis in Cuba, several newborn babies have been abandoned on the streets of the island, both alive and deceased.

Last year, a lifeless baby was found in a trash tank in the city of Pinar del Río. Others were discovered under similar conditions in Old Havana and Las Tunas.

Recently, the body of another baby was found floating in Havana Bay.
