In a desperate and unconventional financial move, the Cuban government will pay for a batch of tractors from Belarus with rum and coffee.
This proposal emerged during the visit to Cuba by the Belarusian Prime Minister, Roman Golovchenko, during which the need to find new markets for the products of both countries was discussed, as reported by the media outlet Plan B.
Before the visit at the beginning of June, Belarus and Cuba approved a mutual trade plan for the next two years, with a projected exchange of 6.8 million dollars in exports from each country; however, trade between both nations will not be carried out with cash due to the lack of money in the coffers of the Caribbean island.
Traditionally, Belarus has exchanged tractors for Cuban medications, but the supply of tractors exceeds the demand for medications in that country, which offers "flexible" payment mechanisms to its partners without liquidity.
To balance this situation, Golovchenko proposed expanding the list of products for barter operations, including rum, cocoa, coffee, and fruit puree, among others.
"Besides pharmaceutical products, we are interested in the supply of rum, cocoa beans, coffee, fruit puree, and other items. We are willing to discuss these matters and, upon reaching an agreement on the price and quality, include them in our commercial exchange scheme," stated the Belarusian official.
In addition to the agreements with Cuba, Belarus has also exchanged tractors for oranges in Africa.
The note does not specify how Cuba will guarantee these payments, given that the island is facing serious problems with the production of beverages and coffee.
