The rains this Tuesday in Santiago de Cuba caused flooding in several areas of the city that have historically struggled with drainage issues, such as the area near the intersection of Calle 3 and Trocha, as shown in images shared on social media.
Journalist Yosmany Mayeta shared a gallery of images on Facebook that highlight the precarious state of the sewage system in that neighborhood of Santiago, which is often affected by sudden floods.
"After the intense downpour in the Caribbean capital, the low-lying streets and those that have historically faced issues with drainage are once again affected by the rapid rise of water," the communicator noted.
A resident from the area told Mayeta, "It's always the same; they don't unblock the drain, and we have to deal with water everywhere."
"Look at how Calle 3 de Trocha is, behind the five-story building," pointed out another user.
Mayeta shared a second gallery of images warning people to exercise caution while navigating the flooded streets.
"Many of the drains in these areas may be open or have loose grates, and it's better to take precautions than to have regrets," he pointed out.
Last June, several municipalities in Havana experienced the consequences of flooding due to heavy rainfall.
The official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso shared several images and videos from the municipalities of Centro Habana, La Habana Vieja, and San Miguel del Padrón, where water has been stagnant in the streets.
The heavy rainfall resulted in scenes that highlighted the risks faced by some individuals due to the downpour, in part due to the poor condition of the roads in Cuba.
One of them showed a modern car that fell into a hole in El Cerro, Havana.
"Another car just crashed there. Now, no one else is going to fall because this man just fell there," a woman can be heard saying in a video shared in the Facebook group "ACCIDENTES BUSES & CAMIONES por más experiencia y menos víctimas!"
