CNE ratifies Maduro's victory with 96.87% of the ballots counted

The opposition claims that González won the election with more than a 30-point lead over Maduro.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela confirmed Nicolás Maduro's victory in last Sunday’s elections with 96.87% of the ballots counted, despite strong protests and allegations of fraud from the opposition.

The president of the CNE, Elvis Amoroso, reported that the participation was 12,386,669 voters (59.97%), with a total of 12,335,884 valid votes.

Of them, Maduro obtained 6,408,844, representing 51.95 percent, according to the entity.

The CNE announced that Edmundo Gonzalez obtained 5,326,104 votes, for 43.18 percent.

Since the previous announcement in which the CNE declared Maduro the winner of the elections, the Venezuelan people have taken to the streets in protest.

They claim that an election has been stolen from them, one that would have actually favored González by a wide margin of more than 30 points, according to 76 percent of the ballots published by the opposition.

Valuing the spontaneous manifestations that have arisen in rejection of the apparent fraud, opposition leader María Corina Machado called for a peaceful demonstration on August 3 in the squares of Venezuela.

Countries such as the United States, Peru, Argentina, and Uruguay have recognized González as the legitimate elected president of the oil nation.
