José Ángel El White: What happened with Cubanito 2002?

Two decades later, now from Miami, El White tells the podcast "Destino Tolk" what happened to this popular Cuban group.

In the early 2000s, an urban music group burst onto the Cuban scene; quickly, Cubanito 2002 became a musical phenomenon that attracted thousands of fans within the island, especially among the youth.

However, although they reached the peak of popularity, the trajectory of this trio made up of Haniel González Martínez (DJ Flipper), Javier Durán Webb (El Doctor), and José Ángel Sastre Pérez (El White) was very short.

Two decades later, now from Miami, El White told the podcast "Destino Tolk" what happened after his first and only album, a commercial success both inside and outside of Cuba, from which he still remembers songs like "Mátame," "Pídeme," and "Aida."

"Cubanito 2002 separates because I decide to pursue my career solo. I was coming to the United States," said the singer, although he clarified that his projects at that time did not materialize. Later, together with El Doctor, he released another album years later, but it was not as successful.

After fame and recognition, difficult times also came for the artist when his son went to the United States and ended up seeking refuge in alcohol: "I was an alcoholic in Cuba. I know what it is to have, to be well, to have a good position, a status, and to be left with nothing."

White has managed to turn that page in his life, and although he has no intentions of returning to the urban genre with DJ Flipper and El Doctor, now that the three of them are in the United States, he is clear that his projections are in music: “I’m looking for the respect of the public, as I once earned it with Cubanito 2002, but this time with my solo career.”

The singer revealed that he is working on something with Alexander Delgado from Gente de Zona, and he also has a song with El Insurrecto.
