A video circulating this Saturday on social media highlights the serious crisis in garbage collection in Havana, where popular corners have been taken over by piles of solid waste.
The material, published on Instagram by the internet user Juan Juan Almeida, shows the corner of Lealtad and San Lázaro in Central Havana, turned into a huge dump.
Juan Juan's followers stated that "this is how all of Cuba is" and questioned the government's intentions of "promoting tourism on the island" with so much garbage in the streets. "I would like to know what tourist is going to want to come here if Cuba is a complete disaster," said an internet user.
The Cuban government has acknowledged issues in managing garbage.
It recently announced that it is seeking support from foreign investors to address the crisis in solid waste management in the country, especially in Havana, where the increase in garbage threatens the health of thousands of people.
Foreign investors presented their alternatives to solve the garbage problem in the Comprehensive Waste Management System of Havana. The regime claims that there are more than ten foreign investment projects on this issue.
A Japanese company proposed the setup of a waste management plant, where the waste arrives unclassified, recyclable materials are recovered, and electrical energy is produced. The foreign company would be responsible for the entire logistics chain.
Meanwhile, no project is being realized, and Cubans continue to suffer from the garbage problem, especially in Havana.
