The American mother Suzanne Flament Smith, a resident of Safety Harbor, Florida, made a surprising discovery while cleaning up the debris left by Hurricane Debby in Tampa Bay.
Flament Smith found, among the trash washed up by the sea to Bayshore Boulevard, a glass bottle with a message dating back to World War II.
He took the bottle home and sat down with his son to try to decipher the mysterious message. The first thing that surprised them was the antiquity of the letter and the sender's handwriting, as it was in cursive.
The author of the letter had very neat handwriting but it was complex to understand. The letter is dated March 4, 1945.
Inside the bottle, besides the written message, there was a bullet cartridge, a bit of sand, and a mini cannonball, all reminders of the military past of the United States.
The letter, with a header from the United States Marine Corps, belonged to a soldier who was writing to his friend from an amphibious training base in Virginia.
The discovery has sparked interest due to its historical value, despite the fact that the document has not been fully authenticated. It is believed to be genuine because of the era, materials, and the context it describes.
Flament Smith hopes to find the descendants of the sender while teaching his children the importance of doing good, protecting their country, and learning to write beautifully because you never know who will read your letters in the future.
