Cuba lost one of its greatest scientists on Monday night with the passing of Dr. Ángel Aguilera Rodríguez, founder of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).
Affectionately known as Dr. Angelito, his legacy is marked by the production of the first leukocyte interferon in the country, a milestone that revolutionized Cuban science and established the island as a reference in the field, according to the official site Cubadebate.
His work in the small house number 149, located in the Cubanacán neighborhood of Havana, was fundamental for the creation of the first Cuban molecule obtained through genetic engineering from human leukocytes.
This breakthrough was not only crucial for the fight against viral diseases and cancer, but it also laid the foundations for the production and export of Cuban biotechnology to the world.
On its Facebook page, the scientific community of CIGB expressed its deep sorrow. “All the workers feel this loss deeply and we send our condolences to his family and friends, and we express our commitment to remain true to the ideals he defended.”
They also made it clear that their contribution to Cuban science will continue to be a source of inspiration for future generations.
