Journalist Mario Vallejo revealed details of the incident where the influencer and Cuban opposition figure Manuel Milanés was shot in the morning on Thursday.

The journalist stated that the activist was witnessing a domestic fight between a man and a woman with two children in front of his house in the locality of Ave María, in Collier County.

The incident escalated when the individual – a 26-year-old man later identified as Hilberto Callejas – rammed his vehicle into the woman's and then got out of his car, approached the victim's vehicle, and broke a window with a firearm, said local sheriff Kevin Rambosk.

Vallejo's account suggests that Milanés came to the defense of the woman who was in the car with two children, positioned himself between her and Callejas, and at that moment the man shot him.

The police described it as "a serious incident of domestic violence that escalated to tragic levels when Callejas shot a witness who tried to intervene."

"A witness –apparently from Milan– witnessed the events and confronted Callejas, who shot him in the shoulder and then fled the scene, starting a police chase," explained Rambosk.

Vallejo stated that the opposition member received three shots; but the police only mentioned one, located in the shoulder.

The altercation occurred just before 9 a.m. in the community of Ave Maria, where sheriff's office agents were deployed after receiving reports of a domestic violence incident, and when Callejas fled, they began to chase him.

"The detectives identified Callejas' vehicle as he was leaving Ave Maria. The agents chased Callejas until he abandoned his vehicle at the intersection of 60th Avenue Northeast and Everglades Boulevard," explained Rambosk.

After abandoning his vehicle, the assailant fled running towards the nearby woods, the sheriff commented.

The gunman now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and child abuse, among others.

Milanés was transferred to the hospital by helicopter and underwent a surgical procedure, Vallejo confirmed.
