The Cuban Zadiel Rivero was found guilty of the fatal stabbing of a man in Hialeah Gardens, Florida, five years ago, while his brother Zandy de la Osa was acquitted of the charge.
On Friday, a jury convicted Rivero, 44, of second-degree murder for killing Frank Canet, 31, in February 2019.
The sentence for the Cuban is expected to be delivered at the end of the year, and he could receive a life sentence, according to a report from NBC6 South Florida.
Meanwhile, De la Osa was declared innocent and walked out of the courtroom as a free man, after spending five years in prison. "I am happy. But I hope they also let my brother out," he stated outside the court.
His defense lawyer, Bruce Lehr, stated that "the jury's verdict demonstrated that it was justifiable, as my client did nothing wrong," and added: "I regret that the final outcome was that someone died."
Canet was murdered on the night of February 11, 2019, in the parking lot of Rivero's house, on the 8900 block of Northwest 112th Terrace.
Rivero, then 38 years old, had a violent altercation with the victim. In the midst of the fight, he stabbed Canet 29 times in the torso with a kitchen knife, and then threw him to the ground, according to images obtained from a security camera installed outside the accused's home.
De la Osa placed his left leg and a metal tube over the victim's body to prevent them from getting up.
Nonetheless, Canet managed to escape and get into his car, but Rivero chased him. The victim's girlfriend, Dilaxy Madruga, tried to call Emergency Services, but she couldn't do it because Rivero took the phone away from her.
Finally, the couple managed to escape and reach the Mount Sinai Hialeah medical center, where Canet passed away.
During the trial, which took place last week, five years after the crime, the brothers did not contest the surveillance footage showing them killing Canet, but they claimed that they were fighting for their lives, NBC6 reported.
"I was desperate and scared. I acted out of fear. That instinct and that fear to save my life and that of my brothers," Rivero declared at the trial, trying to justify the crime before the members of the jury.
In response to the question from his lawyer, Jonathan Jordan, about whether he wished it hadn't happened, the defendant answered: "Of course."
The defense lawyers did not deny the murder, but argued that it was in self-defense because the victim was high and threatening Rivero, according to Telemundo 51.
Jordan relied on the positive result of Canet's methamphetamine toxicology test to claim that the drug caused him to have "superhuman" behavior.
For his part, Lehr stated: "My client was helping his brother to prevent a poisoned Superman from killing him."
During the closing arguments of the trial, the prosecutors reminded the jury that the true victim of the case was Canet and not the brothers, and they displayed a mannequin with more than two dozen pins in the areas where the victim was stabbed.
The stab wounds inflicted by Rivero were very deep, to the point that he severed the pancreas, according to the prosecutor's report.
This is not the only legal case for Rivero, as he is also facing charges of sexual assault against a 16-year-old girl, along with his wife, Yaisel Faya-Guinea. They both recorded the incident with the surveillance cameras from their home.
