Nine Latin American countries have joined the rejection of the arrest warrant issued by the Prosecutor's Office of Venezuela against candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, a rival of Nicolás Maduro in the elections held on July 28, who has denounced the electoral fraud committed by the dictator and the institutions allied with Chavism.
Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay rejected "unequivocally and absolutely the arrest warrant" issued against González Urrutia on Monday, states a joint statement released by the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry.
The signatories condemn the decision and label it as “another attempt to silence Mr. González, to disregard the Venezuelan popular will” and describe it as “political persecution.”
"In a country where there is no separation of powers or minimum judicial guarantees and where arbitrary detentions are common, we condemn these dictatorial practices," they added.
Chile also joined the list of countries condemning this order, with a statement from the country's Foreign Ministry.
"We condemn the arrest warrant against opposition leader Edmundo González. This is yet another attack by the regime of Venezuela on the rule of law. We call for respect for democratic principles, human rights, and the fundamental freedoms of all Venezuelans," wrote Alberto van Klaveren, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Australian nation, on X.
On the subject, Brian A. Nichols, the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, has expressed himself on several occasions, stating that "since the elections on July 28, the Venezuelan people have faced: human rights abuses, arbitrary detentions, indiscriminate and unjust detentions, intimidation," joining the calls from these Latin American countries and the European Union.
On Monday, prosecutor Luis Ernesto Dueñez Reyes signed a document requesting an arrest warrant against former presidential candidate Edmundo González.
On this accusation, opposition leader María Corina Machado expressed on X: "They have lost all sense of reality. By threatening the President Elect, they only manage to unite us more and increase the support of Venezuelans and the world for Edmundo González. Calmness, courage, and firmness. We move forward."
Recently, Machado thanked the statement from the mentioned Latin American countries and said that "Maduro sinks and isolates himself more each day. We are building more strength and consolidating support."
