Edmundo González leaves Venezuela and heads to Spain

Edmundo González, leader of the main opposition coalition in Venezuela, is en route to Spain aboard an aircraft from the Spanish Air Force.

Former presidential candidate Edmundo González, leader of the main opposition coalition in Venezuela, is en route to Spain on a military aircraft, as reported by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares.

"At your request, Edmundo González is flying to Spain aboard an aircraft of the Spanish Air Force. The Government of Spain is committed to the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans," wrote the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs on X.

The Spanish government denied having reached any type of agreement with the Chavista regime to facilitate this trip.

However, the Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, announced that Edmundo González Urrutia had left the country with a safe conduct granted after taking refuge for several days in the Spanish Embassy in Caracas.

"Today, September 7, Edmundo González Urrutia left the country after voluntarily seeking refuge at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain and applied for political asylum," Rodríguez wrote on Instagram.

"In this regard, once the relevant contacts between both governments took place, the necessary steps were fulfilled and in adherence to international law, Venezuela has granted the appropriate safe conducts in the interest of the tranquility and political peace of the country," added the Venezuelan leader.

On September 3, the Venezuelan regime issued an arrest warrant against González on charges such as "usurpation of functions," "forgery of public documents," and "conspiracy," among others.

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the opposition leader failed to appear for a summons from the Prosecutor's Office to clarify the details regarding his alleged electoral victory, which led to the issuance of an arrest warrant.

Edmundo González Urrutia had been announced by his coalition as the winner of the presidential elections held on July 28 in Venezuela, which were deemed fraudulent by the opposition and many international actors, labeling them a sham orchestrated by chavismo.
