Edmundo González leaves Venezuela and heads to Spain.

Edmundo González, leader of the main opposition coalition in Venezuela, is on his way to Spain aboard an aircraft of the air force of the Iberian nation.

Former presidential candidate Edmundo González, leader of the main opposition coalition in Venezuela, is en route to Spain aboard a military plane, according to Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares.

"Edmundo González, at your request, is flying to Spain on a plane from the Spanish Air Force. The Government of Spain is committed to the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans," wrote the Spanish Foreign Minister on X.

The Spanish government denied having reached any kind of agreement with the Chavista regime to facilitate this trip.

However, the Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, announced that Edmundo González Urrutia had left the country with a safe conduct granted after having taken refuge for several days in the Spanish embassy in Caracas.

"Today, September 7, Edmundo González Urrutia left the country, who after voluntarily taking refuge in the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain, requested political asylum," wrote Rodríguez on Instagram.

"In that sense, once the relevant contacts between both governments have taken place, all the necessary steps have been fulfilled, and in adherence to international law, Venezuela has granted the appropriate safe-conducts in the interest of the tranquility and political peace of the country," added the Venezuelan leader.

On September 3, the Venezuelan regime issued an arrest warrant against González on charges such as "usurpation of functions," "forgery of public documents," and "conspiracy," among others.

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the opposition leader did not appear for a summons from the Prosecutor's Office to clarify the details regarding his alleged electoral victory, which led to the arrest warrant.

Edmundo González Urrutia had been declared by his coalition as the winner of the presidential elections held on July 28 in Venezuela, classified by the opposition and broad international actors as a fraud by the chavismo.
