The Miami-Dade police have launched an investigation into the detention of Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill after receiving accusations from fans of the player, who have described the arrest as violent.
The incident occurred last Sunday near the Hard Rock Stadium when Hill was stopped and arrested for speeding, hours before the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL.
The arrest occurred after a verbal altercation between Hill and the officers, which ended with the player handcuffed, pinned to the ground, and arrested.
Several witnesses and teammates of the receiver attempted to mediate in the incident. Shortly after, Hill was released and fined for reckless driving, but he was able to play in the scheduled game that day.
The receiver was key in the Dolphins' 20-17 victory, accumulating a touchdown, seven receptions, and 130 yards. His celebration, mimicking an arrest, has generated multiple reactions on social media.
Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called the arrest "unnecessary" and said it was "shocking" to see his client in that situation. After the meeting, Hill commented: "I still don't know what happened. I want to use this platform to say: 'What would have happened if it weren't Tyreek Hill?'".
The director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, Stephanie Daniels, has ordered an internal investigation to review the actions of the officers involved. One of the agents has been reassigned while the facts are clarified.
This incident has once again brought to the forefront the behavior of NFL players and the penalties they might face for violations of safety and conduct rules.
