The glory of Cuban sports Luis Mario Miranda León passed away this Tuesday at the age of 65, as reported on social media.
"This morning, one of the greats of Santiago wrestling, a glory of Cuban sports, has passed away," wrote the Cuban Alexander Alemán Osuna on Facebook, who is the coach of the national wrestling team of El Salvador.
Another one of Luis Mario's friends recalled that he was known among teammates as X and lamented his loss.
In the comments section of his post, many remembered him as a champion.
"Sad news for our sport and friends. Rest in peace my teacher, who was part of my education fondly (X) my condolences to his family," wrote a former student.
"Rest in Peace, in the Glory of Olympus, my condolences to the family of a great human being, athlete, friend, humble and simple. We feel your departure, a strong hug. You will always be remembered, brother," noted another acquaintance.
Luis Mario was born on May 6, 1959. He was a three-time Pan American champion in the 100 kg division of freestyle wrestling. From 1980 to 1984, he was the top athlete on the National Team.
He retired from active sports in 1985, joining as a coach at the Sports Initiation School (EIDE).
As of the time of writing this note, neither official media nor sports institutions have mentioned his death, and the causes of the passing are also unknown.
