In the context of the International Forum of United Cultures in Saint Petersburg, Russia expressed interest in co-producing Cuban films about the legendary boxer Teófilo Stevenson and the astronaut Arnaldo Tamayo.
During the event, the Minister of Culture of Russia, Olga Liubímova, met with her counterpart from the island, Alpidio Alonso Grau, to review the intergovernmental agreements between both nations in the artistic field, according to a report published on Facebook by the state-run Canal Caribe.
It is worth noting that the career of the deceased Caribbean boxer, considered one of the best heavyweights in history, is closely linked to the influence of Soviet trainers and his rivalry with Russian fighters like Igor Vysotskiy.
Stevenson (1952-2012), three-time Olympic and world champion, had among his great mentors the Soviet coach Andrei Chervonenko, and his third and final triumph under the Olympic rings took place in Moscow in 1980.
"Pirolo," as many called him, won all the titles of the International Amateur Boxing Association during his career.
On the other hand, discussions have also begun to film a movie that commemorates the feat of Arnaldo Tamayo, the first Cuban cosmonaut, who traveled to space in 1980 from the Baikonur cosmodrome alongside Soviet Yury Romanenko.
With these initiatives, Cuba and Russia reaffirm their collaboration in cinema, strengthening cultural exchange and preserving the legacy of two well-known figures in the history of both countries.
According to Canal Caribe, the films will be titled "Teófilo" and "Subir al Cielo."
