After being hospitalized for just over a month and a half, the first triplets born in Villa Clara were discharged this Wednesday after reaching the required weight.
José Antonio, José Miguel, and Alicia, who were born on August 2, along with their parents Aracelys Fleites León and Yosami Álvarez Mora, and the rest of the family, are now embarking on the exciting adventure of returning home to build their life together.
According to the state-run newspaper Vanguardia, that was the best gift Aracelys received, as she was celebrating her birthday that day.
In their home in Calabazar de Sagua, in the municipality of Encrucijada, a new chapter begins for this couple who, after 15 years of longing, finally experience the joy of becoming parents.
Fleites spent more than four months in the hospital, from her arrival as a patient until the birth of her children: “After the birth, the little ones spent ten days in Neonatology, then they were moved to the Skin-to-Skin room, and today we finally returned home, in Calabazar,” the mother summarized with emotion.
Since then, she recounts, not much has changed: “José Antonio is still the one who takes charge, the first to be born, the loudest, restless, and the one who gains weight the most. On the other hand, José Miguel, even from the womb, has been very calm. He drinks his milk and adapts to any situation, while Alicia brings a middle ground—sometimes she is very passive, and other times she shows her warrior side. However, at three in the morning, she is like clockwork, and it takes a lot of effort to get her to sleep. Once that moment passes, she returns to tranquility,” Fleites noted.
However, even though today is filled with happiness, the journey to giving birth was quite challenging. After trying all available infertility treatments without success, they completed the legal and consent procedures in the country to undergo in vitro fertilization abroad.
The preparations to welcome the triplets home have been intense, as the family has dedicated themselves to making the house ready for the three new members, undertaking renovations, painting, and organizing their belongings.
The father, who is a farmer, is particularly excited, as he looks forward to feeling the warmth of his children when they return from work.
Before leaving the hospital, the mother expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the birth and well-being of her babies and herself.
He emphasized the constant attention, even outside of regular hours, from the doctors and obstetricians, who were available to address any questions or concerns that arose.
Despite being a doctor and obstetrician herself, she confessed that experiencing childbirth as a first-time mother has been challenging and, at times, terrifying.
Regarding the development of the triplets, the doctor in charge of their care in the Skin-to-Skin room, Olga María López Popa, confirmed to Vanguardia that the babies have made favorable progress, with an appropriate weight gain.
Although José Antonio and Alicia initially required additional treatments before being discharged, all the babies have now surpassed the necessary weight to be ready to go home.
They will undergo strict medical monitoring at the Neurodevelopment consultation and other specialties to ensure their healthy growth, she noted.
Finally, Dr. José Antonio Marrero Martínez, who assisted in the delivery, expressed his honor in being the godfather of the triplets and in charge of taking them home.
This event, according to the doctor, has been one of the most significant moments of his professional career.
Since 2020, the "Mariana Grajales" Hospital had not experienced the simultaneous cries of triplets. On that occasion, Dayana Sifontes Linates gave birth to three sons, named Ángel Daniel, Joel Davis, and Danis Joel.
One of the most recent reports of a triplet birth in Cuba occurred last April when the first cesarean delivery of triplets of the year took place at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Hospital in the province of Holguín, with both the mother and the newborns in perfect health.
