Facebook user Beatriz Alonso revealed the deplorable state of the Pantheon of Catalina Lasa and Juan Pedro Baró, in the Colón Cemetery, Havana.

The shared images show the devastation caused by neglect and vandalism, which have severely affected this emblematic mausoleum. The situation has reached such a critical point that, according to Alonso, "the remains of Catalina and Juan Pedro were moved to the Pantheon of the Emigrants."

Catalina Lasa and Juan Pedro Baró, protagonists of one of the most well-known love stories in Cuban society in the first half of the 20th century, rested in this tomb which, unfortunately, has been the subject of desecration on numerous occasions.

The photographs captured last week by Alonso show how the mausoleum that was once a symbol of power and opulence is now a deteriorated structure, marked by the signs of vandalism.

This event has shocked many due to the historical and artistic value of the pantheon, built in 1932 in Art Deco style, which holds the remains of the couple.

Catalina Lasa and Juan Pedro Baró, whose romance was a source of scandal in Havana society at the time, defied prejudices to fulfill their love.

Beatriz Alonso also noted that the alleged perpetrator of the most aggressive vandalism has been identified and arrested, but it is important to remember that this cemetery has been looted several times.

The desecration of the tomb between 2017 and 2018 was motivated by rumors that Catalina had been buried with valuable jewelry. The alleged thief was a gravedigger nicknamed Angelito, who must have had help from accomplices, due to the proximity of the tomb to the cemetery entrance and the presence of guards.

The Pantheon of Catalina Lasa, built by Baró for his beloved wife, is known not only for the love story it represents but also for its unique architectural beauty.

The tomb was designed with luxurious materials, including white marble, polished black granite, and Lalique crystal. However, all this splendor has fallen victim to neglect and desecration, as denounced by the images shared by Alonso.
