Two alleged pickpockets were arrested this Monday after attempting to steal a cell phone from a young man on a bus of route P3, in 10 de Octubre, Havana.

The incident occurred at the Porvenir stop between Fonts and Bouza, when a mother was trying to get on the P3 with her son, describes the official pro-government profile linked to the Ministry of the Interior, "El Cubano Fiel" on Facebook.

According to this source, the two wrongdoers took advantage of the crowd of people, which is so common due to the transportation crisis in Cuba, and stole a mobile phone from the boy's pocket.

It also points out that the victim realized in time about the theft and confronted the pickpockets, "who were detained by the people at the bus stop" and later arrested by the police from patrol car 424, who took them to the Aguilera station in Lawton.

Thefts in Cuban public transportation have become another reality that residents on the island have to face, as these situations are conducive for thieves who take advantage of pushes, crowds, and disturbances among people to commit their crimes.

At the beginning of the year, a similar incident occurred at the corner of Monte and Belascoaín, when an alleged pickpocket was caught while trying to commit his theft on a bus of the P14 route in Old Havana.

The alleged thief was handcuffed in front of dozens of people who gathered to witness the event, amidst the wave of crime and street violence in Cuba.

In June of this year, another similar event occurred at P6, specifically at the La Lechera stop, Habana Vieja.

On that occasion, the criminal was captured after stealing a cell phone from a Cuban woman amid a crowd.

According to a report published in Mesa Redonda, a man who attempted to steal a cellphone from its owner on a bus of the P12 route in Havana was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The version broadcast by that official program states that when the victim realized the robbery, the bus driver stopped and kept the doors closed; then a passenger made a phone call, and it was quickly discovered who had taken it.

When caught in the act, the pickpocket did not back down and pulled out a knife in an attempt to escape, but he did not succeed.

The thief was tried for the crimes of robbery with violence and illegal possession of firearms, and the Prosecutor's Office requested a joint sentence of 10 years of imprisonment for him, in addition to the payment of more than 8,000 pesos for the damages caused to the cellphone.
