With the American team, Cuban-American Grandmaster (GM) Leinier Domínguez became the first born on the island to win a team medal at the Chess Olympiad.

The milestone occurred this Sunday in Budapest, Hungary, where the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad is taking place. At this venue, the Indian team won the gold medal (21 points), finishing four points ahead of their five closest competitors. The United States (17 points) placed second, and Uzbekistan took home the bronze medal.

Leinier Domínguez, also known as the idol of Güines, obtained U.S. citizenship in 2018 and that same year became a member of the chess federation of that country.

In October of last year, Leinier (2739) secured second place in the United States Chess Championship after drawing with GM Hans Moke Niemann (2674).

Taking a place on the podium of the event earned him a prize of 35 thousand dollars.

At the end of that year, he was ranked among the top 10 chess players in the world, a list led by Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, followed by Americans Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura.

He is currently in 13th place in the world ranking with 2748 points.
