September 28 will be etched in the memory of the Cuban Yoel Fernández Armentero, as he made history by winning the fifth edition of the Heroes Cup organized by the French Federation of Natural Bodybuilding in the city of Montargis.
In his debut in professional fights, Fernández stood out for his presence on stage and a physique that impressed the judges, which secured him first place and put his name in various media outlets.
In an interview with Diario de Cuba, the Caribbean athlete spoke about the significance of the event, the value of victory, and some practices of a modality that requires not using anabolic supplements.
"I have become a professional in that entity, but I have not received any cash prize so far," he said before commenting that "he had to undergo rigorous anti-doping controls, which included a urine test and a polygraph test to certify that he does not use steroids."
In this regard, the aforementioned medium stated that natural bodybuilding, as explained by the blog Enaturalfit, is a discipline characterized by the absence of doping substances.
For such reasons, the events - recreational and professional - are subject to strict anti-doping controls to ensure a level playing field among athletes.
Fernández noted that he learned about this event through social media and was impressed by the seriousness of the anti-doping controls. "The training and preparation were very tough, and the hunger and fatigue were even worse," confessed the athlete, whose sacrifice allowed him to shine in his first competition.
Leaving Cuba was decisive in Fernández's career. In fact, he pointed out that in the Greater Antilles, bodybuilding is practiced with the allowed use of doping substances. "I am not in favor of it at all," he stated, having obtained the title of "high-performance personal trainer and bodybuilding techniques" in 2020, in search of continuing to grow in the fitness world.
