The mini-zoo "Elpidio Valdés" in the municipality of Songo La Maya, in Santiago de Cuba, was flooded on Sunday afternoon due to the rains that have occurred in that part of the country, highlighting the neglect and lack of maintenance of the place.
Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who shared the news on his Facebook profile, also showed photos of how the place was affected by the flooding.
Although the place is named a mini-zoo, an internet user clarified that it has no more animals than a "sad crocodile."
"Sad reality, when it was the Parque de La Rana it was better," confessed another user.
Another person commented that years ago it was a lagoon where the water came up to the patio of their house, but then they turned it into a park and it began to flood, “it must have clogged drains,” they speculated.
Zoos in Cuba are not experiencing good times and are a reflection of the crisis and decay in which the island's economy is immersed, which does not have the means to maintain these recreational sites for the citizens.
A few months ago, it was reported that the Ruperto Anfiloquio Suárez Castellanos zoo, located in the El Guamá area of Baracoa, has lost its most attractive animals and also lacks food for the birds that still survive.
The park director, Ángel Rolando Tavera Sourt, told the local Radio Baracoa that the facility lost its charm due to the absence of animals that used to attract a lot of people, such as the hippopotamus Eric, the giraffe, ostriches, and zebras.
It was also revealed that the animals at the Bartolomé Masó Zoo in Manzanillo, Granma province, are showing a critical state of malnutrition and extreme weakness.
An article from the independent newspaper 14ymedio revealed the disastrous conditions in which the lions, iguanas, monkeys, and other animals in the zoo find themselves, victims of the shortage of suitable food for their respective diets, due to the severe economic crisis that Cuba is undergoing, which has a greater impact on the feeding of both the population and the animals.
