The Cuban political prisoner Miguel Díaz Bauzá, 81 years old, completes three long decades of imprisonment in the jails of the communist regime on the island this Tuesday.

Tried in 1994 and sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment, Bauzá was accused of "infiltration," "illegal entry into the country," "terrorism," and other alleged acts against state security after landing on the shores of the island with the aim of organizing an armed uprising to overthrow the late dictator Fidel Castro, according to Cubanet.

Born in Caibarién, current province of Villa Clara, on March 19, 1948, Bauzá is one of the oldest political prisoners in Cuba.

During his prolonged imprisonment, he has gone through several prisons and is currently incarcerated at the "Campamento la 2" penitentiary center, in the municipality of Remedios in Villa Clara.

In recent years, her health has significantly worsened due to ailments such as psoriasis, diabetes, hypertension, and circulation problems, as reported by her daughter, Karen María León, to the aforementioned media.

Díaz Bauzá, who lived in the United States before his arrest, was a chef in important restaurants and practiced boxing in his youth. However, his life took a 180-degree turn when he decided to return to his homeland with a group of opponents, including Armando Sosa Fortuny, who considered him a "patriot" and admired his resilience in the face of torture and mistreatment.

Sosa Fortuny passed away while serving his 30-year prison sentence, at the age of 76.

Despite his imprisonment, Bauzá has remained steadfast in his fight for the freedom of Cuba. In recent years, the regime has allowed him to receive periodic passes to visit his family, with whom he tries to make the most of the time, especially with his granddaughters and great-grandchildren, Cubanet reported.

In 2020, her resistance was recognized with the "Luis Boitel Freedom Award," granted by the Cuban Democratic Directorate, an honor aimed at highlighting the leadership and courage of those who fight for freedom within the island.

In 2023, the Cuban government released political prisoner Humberto Eladio Real Suárez, 55 years old, after spending the last 29 years in prison.

Real Suárez was taken prisoner in 1994 after landing in Cuba with a small expedition that aimed to initiate an armed movement in the Escambray mountain range.

At that time, at only 26 years old and residing in Miami, Florida, he joined the command that included, among others, the aforementioned Sosa Fortuny and Díaz Bauza.

After the landing, they had an confrontation with the Cuban military forces in which, according to the regime's version, one soldier was fatally shot.

The anti-communist fighters were arrested and tried. In the case of Real Suárez, his initial sentence was the death penalty, but in 2008 it was commuted to 30 years.
